2016-17 Scholarship Opportunities

The following Scholarship opportunities have been received by the BC Counseling Staff recently.  Please contact the college or organization directly or call the BC Counseling Office for details at ext. 224.


The Audubon Society of Western PA is again offering “The Beulah Frey Environmental Scholarship” for students interested in an environmental area of study.  Visit to complete an application.


The Horatio Alger Award of $2,500 is offered to students who will pursue a Technical Education and meet the financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.  Students may apply online until June 15, 2017.  Visit to apply.  Additional information can be found regarding this program at


Applications are available for the Eugene O. King Scholarship in the BC Counseling Office for this $500.00 scholarship.  You are eligible to apply if you are a graduating senior entering college in the fall and you must live in the Westwood, Crafton-Heights or West End areas or be a member of Mt. Pisgah Church.  Their ‘receive by deadline’ is June 1, 2017. If you have questions, call the church office at 412-921-8444.


Nursing Schools Almanac has just launched the 3rd annual Aspiring Nurse Scholarship for $1,000.00.  The applications will be accepted until midnight on June 30, 2017.  Go to their website and click the banner on the right-hand side of the website’s homepage.  Visit .

The Bernie Matthews Opportunity Foundation

Bernie Matthews Opportunity Foundation Applications are now being accepted for the 2017-18 academic year and can be downloaded from the foundation website at

This inaugural award of $4,000 ($1,000 per academic year for four years) will be made to a local high school senior who will be an incoming freshman for the 2017-18 academic year. The Bernie Matthews Opportunity Foundation Scholarship seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity or other difficult life circumstances, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society.  Additional details on scholarship requirements can be found on the application.

Green Tree Rotary Club Scholarship

Again this year, the annual Green Tree Rotary Club will award 2 Scholarships valued $1,500.00 each to graduating Seniors of the Class of 2017.  Visit their website and click on Scholarship application on the right side of the page.  Applications are due by March 31, 2017.

Jamie Ellenberger Scholarship

The Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation is inviting participation in the Jamie Ellenberger Scholarship Program.  Two, $1,000.00 scholarships are being offered.  Any senior planning to attend an accredited two or four year post-high school education program is eligible to apply.

Kiwanis Club of Sheraden

Seniors who are residents of the Sheraden section of Pittsburgh, are eligible to apply for this $1,000.00 scholarship.  The deadline to submit an application is April 7, 2017.  Click  here,  Kiwanis 2017  for a detailed information sheet.

Ralph B. Canterbury Scholarhip

The Clearview Federal Credit Union is again offering 10 Canterbury Scholarships valued at $1,000.00 each.   Call Denise Kennedy at 412.269.3057 or visit to apply online.  Applications must be received by March 31, 2017.

The Constance T. Rockwell Scholarship Program for Musical Theater

The Pittsburgh CLO Guild is now accepting applicants for the Constance T. Rockwell Scholarship.  12th Grade students with an interest in the performing arts should apply for these $4,000.00 scholarships based on talent, financial need, scholastic merit and school and community involvement.  Click here  Pgh CLO Guild 2017  for an application.  Completed applications must be postmarked by April 14, 2017.


This award of $1,500 for the recipient’s first year of undergraduate study and is renewable up to $6,000 if the student maintains good academic standing and demonstrates involvement in campus activities. State Farm Good Neighbor Scholarship

Seniors who will graduate from high school at the end of the 2016-2017 school year, plans to enroll in a full time 2 or 4 year accredited college, tech school, etc., has a 2.5 to 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, is a U.S. citizen and demonstrates financial need, may qualify.  Up to 50 selected recipients will receive a $2,500 award for undergraduate study only.  For additional information and to apply for this scholarship, please visit their site at

 Green Tree Woman’s Civic Club Annual Scholarship Program

The Green Tree Woman’s Civic Club is offering 2 scholarships for Green Tree residents.  The first is open to students currently in their SENIOR YEAR of high school in the amount of $500.  The second, valued at $1,000, is open to Undergraduate College students who have completed one academic year of college.

American Society of Materials   (ASM International)

The Pittsburgh Golden Triangle chapter of ASM International established the Owen M. Katz High School Scholarship. Qualified graduating seniors, interested in pursuing a career in the field of Engineering in the metals or materials fields, are eligible to apply for this $1,500.00 scholarship donated by the Katz family.  Postmark or email deadline to apply is February 10, 2017.   Click here for an application.

Bob Williams Scholarship

Current high school seniors, residing in the boundaries of the Rotary District 7300, (Allegheny, Beaver and parts of Westmorland Counties), who are U.S. Citizens with a 2.5 GPA or higher, may qualify for this need-based scholarship of $2,000 per academic year.  For an application, visit , on the far right side, scroll down to the download comment and click on the Williams Scholarship.  The postmark deadline is the last Friday in February, 2017.

Pittsburgh Rotary Foundation Scholarship

These need-based scholarships of $1,500.00 each, will be awarded to 6 high school seniors.   The criteria for eligibility is as follows:  Applicant must have a 3.2 or higher GPA, be a senior applying to colleges and must be currently attending high school in Allegheny County.  The postmark deadline is Friday, March 10, 2107. The Pittsburgh Foundation

The Pittsburgh Foundation web site has many scholarships to offer students in grade levels ranging from Kindergarten to graduating seniors, as well as High School Graduates.
Visit them at  and click on ‘Scholarships’ in the upper right hand corner of their home page.   With some apply directly on-line while others may need to be downloaded. Below are some scholarships that have been recently brought to our attention.

Anna N. Dosen Scholarship 

This scholarship benefits students of Serbian background planning to major in the field of science (Engineering and/or Health Sciences).

Irene and Harry Louik Scholarship

This scholarship is for students who plan to become involved in some way with the performing arts.  The deadline is May 15, 2017.

Joseph “Murph” Irwin Memorial Scholarship is for high school seniors who graduated from St. Louise de Marillac Grade School.

Melville Alexander Eberhardt Scholarship

This scholarship is for graduating seniors residing in Western Pennsylvania who plan to attend a two or four-year accredited college or university.

Tuition Funding Sources

Tuition Funding Sources (TFS) is sponsored exclusively by Wells Fargo and is using social media to help students apply for scholarships. Every day TFS will post a new scholarship using social media, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram called “The Scholarship of the Day”. They claim they have the largest scholarship database in the world. Parents and students should visit and click on the social media icons to follow one or more of their social media accounts to have info delivered to your smartphone, tablet or computer, every day.
