Scholarships for Freshmen

Endowed by faculty, organizations, individuals and families, Bishop Canevin is able to offer current and incoming students a number of scholarships based on academics, service, leadership and/or need. The following describe current scholarship opportunities and the specific requirements for each.

Incoming Freshman Scholarships

The Fr. Leo Henry Scholarship

Five (5) one-half tuition renewable scholarships awarded to incoming freshmen based solely on academic achievement. Qualified students are notified of their eligibility for application by letter from the BC school principal. Criteria evaluated for consideration are: BC Placement Test scores, standardized test scores, academic record and a brief letter of recommendation from the grade school principal. A scholarship committee will select the awardees from all qualified completed applications. Renewable annually. Student must maintain a 3.5 or greater QPA.

The Magis Scholarship

Created through the generosity of Jay ’65 and Judy ’65 Shock, this renewable scholarship aims to assist those incoming freshmen with demonstrated financial need who live in the City of Pittsburgh and show academic promise. Up to five (5) renewable scholarships will be awarded each year ranging from $500 – $1500. Requires a BCHS Scholarship Application, brief letter of recommendation from the grade school principal, and the PSAS application. Renewable annually.

The Class of 1988 Scholarship

This scholarship was founded by Chris Brokaw ’88, Lina Insana ’88, Jeff Gnipp ’88, Bob Williams ’88 and an anonymous donor. Based on financial need, it assists an incoming freshman by providing the student with a $500 annual scholarship for four years. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required.

The Principal’s Scholarship

Scholarships range from $300 – $1000, awarded on the basis of financial need and academic promise. Requires a BCHS Scholarship Application, brief letter of recommendation from the grade school principal, and the PSAS application. Renewable annually.

Student Council Scholarship

$1000 awarded yearly to 5-7 incoming freshmen. The recipients will be selected from among those eighth-grade students who have been recommended by their grade school principals as demonstrating a marked degree of involvement in their school and parish throughout the grade school years. Requires a BCHS Scholarship Application and a brief letter of recommendation from the grade school principal.

Jack & Anna Mae McGinley Scholarship

Established by the McGinley Family in memory of their late parents & grandparents, Jack & Anna Mae, this scholarship is a $1,500 award to one incoming freshman with one or more sibling(s) currently in attendance at Bishop Canevin. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have a ‘B’ average, demonstrate leadership and take the Placement Exam at Bishop Canevin. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required.

Maura Grace Schwab Memorial Scholarship

Mrs. Marilyn Schwab established this $2,500 scholarship to honor the memory of her daughter, Bishop Canevin alumna, Maura Grace Schwab ’04 who passed away in 2015. The applicant must demonstrate financial need, should be a “B” average student and an active participant in church, community and/or school activities. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required.

Duke Tomasic Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Mr. Lawrence “Duke” Tomasic by his wife, Donna, this $500 scholarship to one incoming freshman honors the former Math Teacher who taught at Bishop Canevin from 1987 to 2011. The candidate must be a student in the Bishop Canevin 8th grade Accelerated Math & Science program and  demonstrate a love for Math through his/her participation in the classroom. BCHS Scholarship Application required.

Cygrymus Scholarship

Established in honor of Mr. Ronald Cygrymus, long-time faculty member and administrator, a $500 grant will be awarded to one incoming freshman. Candidate must have achieved at least a ‘B’ average in grade school years and be actively involved in his/her school. BCHS Scholarship Application required.

Mitch Scholarship

Established by a number of his former students in the memory of beloved Math teacher, Mr. John Mieczkowski, this $500 award is given to one incoming freshman from St. Philip School, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Guardian Angels or Holy Innocents parishes with an interested in Math. BCHS Scholarship Application and an essay on the subject “Why I Love Math” (100 words or less) required.

Doris Hesselberg Endowed Scholarship

Named in memory of Mrs. Doris Hesselberg, former Bishop Canevin teacher, this scholarship will be awarded to an incoming student who has at least a “B” average and has an interest and excels in a foreign language. Amount varies; not less than $500. BCHS Scholarship Application and a brief letter of recommendation from the foreign language teacher are required.

 Joseph and Mary Jane Zyra Scholarship

Named in honor of their parents, this scholarship was established in 2007 by sons Joseph ’70 and Gary ’71. This $1000 scholarship is awarded to one incoming freshman with financial need from Ss. Simon & Jude Parish or Our Lady of Grace Elementary School or parish who shows promise in the areas of student leadership and academics. BCHS Scholarship Application, PSAS application, and a brief letter of recommendation from a pastor, principal, teacher, youth minister or similar adult leader are required.

 Grandparents’ Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Marianne Reinhart and family in memory of their mother, Margaret Halligan Snock. The $500 scholarship is awarded to one incoming Catholic freshman who has exhibited outstanding leadership above and beyond normal participation in organized events in their school, parish, or community. BCHS Scholarship Application and one letter of recommendation verifying the student’s role(s) in creating, organizing and leading others in a project or effort that has made a difference are required.

Alumni Legacy Scholarship

This scholarship was established by alumni serving on the Bishop Canevin Board of Directors to assist students with financial need. The award will range from $500-$1000 for an incoming freshman. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required.

The James P. Presken Memorial Scholarship

The James P. Presken Memorial Scholarship was created by the Rakaczky Family to honor and memorialize Mr. Presken’s legacy at Bishop Canevin as a coach, parent and friend. The $500 scholarship is awarded to one incoming freshman actively involved in school and with demonstrated financial need. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required.

The Class of ’78 Memorial Scholarship

Originally established by the Class of 1978 and West Penn Allegheny Health System in memory of classmate and employee, Betsy Gannon, who was tragically killed in 2009, this $500 -$1500 scholarship is awarded to an involved, promising freshman an now honors the memory of ALL deceased members of the Class of ’78. BCHS Scholarship Application is required.

Asti, Curti, Foster Memorial Scholarship

This $500 scholarship was founded by Chuck Curt ’68 and Mel Billingsley ’71 in memory of Art Asti ’71, Tom Curti ’71 and Jim Foster ’71. The scholarship assists a graduate of St. Philip School with financial need. BCHS Scholarship Application and PSAS application required.

Bishop Canevin Junior Achievement Scholarship

This award was presented by Junior Achievement of Western PA to BCHS to recognize the dedication and exemplary service of our students who teach JA economic lessons to students in the elementary schools. The BC students have chosen to give back this award by creating a $250 scholarship for an incoming freshman who has participated in JA during their eighth grade year at one of the following schools: Our Lady of Grace, St. Philip, Holy Trinity, St. Margaret, or St. Patrick School. BCHS Scholarship Application required and an essay (approx. 100 words) explaining why the student would like to become a Bishop Canevin High School JA teacher.

Richard R. Grandey Scholarship

Established by Sr. Brigid Marie Grandey, S.C. former Asst. Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Pittsburgh and her family in memory of her brother, the late Richard R. Grandey. $1500 awarded to one incoming freshman at each of the Catholic high schools. The awardee must exhibit above-average academic performance, a positive attitude about school, kindness to others, and a community mindedness through participation in outside projects/ programs. Requires Grandey Scholarship application.

Mary S. Del Vecchio and Mary E. Kulback Memorial Scholarship

Established by Mr. Russell Del Vecchio and the late Kathleen Kulback Del Vecchio in memory of their parents, a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a freshman at the end of the first semester. The scholarship will be dispensed at the start of the second semester upon verification of a 3.0 QPA, an exemplary discipline record and family need. Completed PSAS application required.

Junior Achievement’s Cardinal Wuerl/Bishop Zubik Scholarship

Scholarships will be awarded to 8th grade students throughout the diocese from Junior Achievement of Southwestern PA in the names of Cardinal Wuerl and Bishop Zubik. Contact JA at 412-208-4747 for eligibility guidelines.
