The Music Department’s courses are designed for participation by all students. Some courses do not require prior experience; others require prior experience and/or approval of the Music Director.
The Bishop Canevin Marching Crusaders is comprised of musicians and Crusettes. Incoming students in seventh or eighth grade are invited to join the musicians as a part of the Marching Crusaders through the Apprenticeship Program.
During the summer, the Marching Crusaders rehearse for two weeks for a mandatory band camp that takes place at Bishop Canevin High School. At the conclusion of band camp, rehearsals take place on Wednesdays after school.
The Marching Crusaders perform at all varsity football games, as well as parades in downtown Pittsburgh and Kennywood Park and local band festivals.
The Concert Band consists of freshmen through senior instrumentalists who want to refine their skill on their instrument. The band performs in the Christmas in the Courtyard and Spring concerts. The band performed in a PMEA adjudication at Upper St. Clair High School in the Spring of 2018 and received a high Good rating.
The Crusaders Jazz Band is a new ensemble for the 2018-19 school year and is open to sophomore through senior instrumentalists who want to expand their musical knowledge and skill. The jazz band consists of both traditional and non-traditional jazz instruments. They perform as a part of the Christmas in the Courtyard and Spring concerts and play a variety of jazz, swing, pop, and rock music.
