PITTSBURGH ROTARY “STUDENT OF DISTINCTION” PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Rotary Club’s primary service objective is supporting Pittsburgh Youth in achieving their full potential. This Youth Service is achieved through Interact Clubs (High School), Rotaract Clubs (Colleges) and specific local Service Projects. One specific such local Service project is the “Student of Distinction” Program. This project is a partnership of Rotary and a number of local Secondary Schools through which outstanding Senior Students are honored for outstanding performance in both academics and community service. The Pittsburgh Rotary Club honors one Student of Distinction each month at a Wednesday luncheon at the Omni William Penn Hotel. The student, the student’s parents or guardians and a school representative are luncheon guests of the Rotary Club. The Award Ceremony features a description of the student’s qualifications by the School Representative followed by student remarks. A handsome personalized plaque is presented to the student to memorialize the event. The selection of the students to be honored as Rotary “Students of Distinction” is totally in the hands of the schools. The only Rotary requirement is that the student selected must have an excellent record of community/school service in addition to a strong academic record. The Pittsburgh Rotary Club is the 20th oldest Rotary Club. There are currently over 34,000 Rotary Clubs in the World.
